Place Value is important: A donut on the right-hand post has a value of 1.
On the middle post, it has a value of 1 ten. On the left-hand post it has a value of 1 hundred. Join another stand to extend into thousands, tens of thousands, etc. Add a decimal point to the ones column digit and make numbers smaller than one!!!
The posts hold EXACTLY 9 DONUTS because the largest digit in any column of our number system is 9.
